What is Tide?

Tide is a free, students-only social app built to help you actually meet people at your college — not scroll past them. Every user is verified with a real .edu email.

Quick answer

Tide is a free social app for college students, available on iOS and as a web app at tidecampus.com. Every user signs in with a verified .edu school email, so it's students only — no bots, strangers, or anonymous outsiders. Unlike anonymous gossip feeds, Tide is built to help you meet real people on your campus through a daily interest-matched student, class group chats, and campus events.

Tide is a social app for college students. It's free, it runs on the web and on iPhone, and the one rule that shapes everything else is this: you can only join with a verified .edu school email. That means everyone on Tide is an actual student at an actual college. No bots, no recruiters, no random strangers, no anonymous outsiders lurking in your feed.

The point of Tide isn't to give you another thing to scroll. It's to help you meet people — the classmate you'd never have spoken to, the person two dorms over who's also into climbing, the student in your section who's just as lost in orgo as you are.

Who is Tide for?

Tide is for college and university students in the US — anyone with a valid .edu address. It's especially built for the people who find a big campus weirdly lonely. That's not a small group. According to the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Making Caring Common report (2021), 36% of Americans reported "serious loneliness," with young adults among the hardest hit. A huge school can have 30,000+ students and still feel like nobody knows your name.

That's the exact problem Tide was made for. You can see which campuses are live and growing on the campuses page, and read the fuller story on the about page.

The 3 core features

Tide does three things, and it tries to do them well rather than be everything at once.

  • Daily Tide — one student from your campus, matched to you each day on shared interests. Not an endless swipe deck. One real person, one day, low pressure. See how the daily match works.
  • Class group chats — find and talk to the people actually in your courses. Coordinate on a problem set, find a study group, or just put faces to the names in your section. More on class group chats.
  • Campus events & feed — an optionally-anonymous campus feed plus events happening near you, so you always know what's going on this weekend. See campus events.

You also get a simple 5-digit friend code to add people you meet in real life, no awkward "what's your @" required.

How is Tide different from anonymous apps?

Apps like Sidechat, Fizz, YikYak, and Jodel are mostly anonymous gossip feeds. They can be funny, but they're built around hiding who you are — which is also why they tend to fill up with drama, pile-ons, and people you'll never actually meet.

Tide is the opposite bet. Identity is real but optional: you can post anonymously in the feed when you want to, but the app's whole job is helping you connect with named, verified students you can grab coffee with. The anonymous feed is one corner of Tide, not the entire product.

Is Tide free? What platforms is it on?

Yes — Tide is completely free. There's no paywall on the core features.

You can use it two ways: the web app in any browser at tidecampus.com, or the iPhone app, which is currently in TestFlight beta — you can join the beta here. The web and iOS apps share the same backend, so your account, chats, and matches stay in sync across both. An Android version is planned.

Where did Tide come from?

Tide started with a real, specific frustration. The founder went to UC San Diego — a school with more than 30,000 students — and found it genuinely hard to make friends. Surrounded by thousands of people and still isolated. The classes were huge, everyone seemed to already have their group, and there was no obvious way to just meet someone.

Tide is the fix for that feeling. Not another feed to doom-scroll, but a way to turn "I'm around 30,000 people and know almost none of them" into actual conversations and actual friends. That's the whole reason it exists. You can read more about how we think about safety and verification on the trust page.

If that sounds like your campus, the fastest way to understand Tide is to try it. Open the web app, sign in with your .edu email, and see who's around. It's free, it takes a minute, and the worst case is you meet one new person.
